Just as soon as I can get back to writing, I’ll take Lee to Hong Kong. After a while I wanted to be somewhere normal.Īpparently I do have a Puritan conscience. Lots of very, very rich and lots of very, very poor with nothing much in between. The class structure in Dubai is skewed into what I used to call a dumbbell curve when I was teaching. Those people stand on the shoulders of other ex-pats – maids, construction workers, taxi drivers. People at the top of the tree make a lot of money and fling it around with abandon. As Lee says in a scene at the Dubai Gold and Diamond Park, “my Puritan soul was revolted.” I never thought of myself as having a Puritan soul, but I was revolted by Dubai. I thought taking Lee there would be a hoot, but I found that the place began to grate on me after a while. It majors in excess, over-the-top business enterprises, buildings, restaurants, hotels, art. What is something that you learned about yourself while writing Dead in Dubai?ĭubai is more glitzy than any other place in the world. I write softer, more humorous, and, as the reader who said I was channeling the classics said, more “world-weary.” She still walks down the same dark streets the guys do, though. I found that I couldn’t write hard-boiled. When I wrote The Spider Catchers, my goal was to create a hard-boiled female character who would walk down the same mean, dark streets the men in thrillers do, but I’m afraid Lee Carruthers turned out rather soft-boiled. A couple of reviewers of The Spider Catchers remarked that my vocabulary was sometimes old-fashioned, and a reader of Dead in Dubai said that I was “channeling classic espionage novels of the past.” I’ve seen those movies too. It takes me back to watching old movies when I was a kid.
